Cumberland Caverns began when surveyor Aaron Higgenbotham discovered a seemingly endless cave on Cardwell Mountain in 1810. For over 140 years, the cave remained known primarily to local explorers and caving enthusiasts. In 1953, members of the National Speleological Society discovered a connection between Higgenbotham Cave and the smaller Henshaw Cave, creating the unified Cumberland Caverns system. Roy Davis and Tank Gorin developed the cave for public access beginning in 1955, and Roy Davis officially opened Cumberland Caverns to the public on July 4, 1956.

The cave system has been surveyed to reveal at least 27+ miles of mapped passages, with additional unmapped leads remaining. Historical inscriptions dating back to 1869 can be found throughout the cave, and evidence of saltpeter mining from the War of 1812 or Civil War era remains visible in Henshaw Cave. The cave was featured in the 1982 international film “Secrets of the Phantom Caverns” (later retitled “What Waits Below”) and has hosted world-class concerts and cultural events for decades.
